Owe My Goodness

You may be seeing red when you see how much your home state is in red

There is some truth to that old saying “good things come in small packages.” Debt is one of those things.

Maryland is one of the most indebted states in the country, according to Moody’s credit-rating agency. It owes about $4,677 per resident, reports the Washington Examiner. The state ranks 13th in the country for debt, more than New York and California owe.

Virginians, on the other hand, are sitting relatively pretty. They owe, on average, just $2,257, ranking 31st on the list.

Most of that debt comes from states’ pension programs. Maryland’s system, for example, is underfunded by about $18 billion; Virginia’s owes about $11 billion.
