One Person Killed; Residents Flee Apartment Fire

D.C. fire officials said one person was killed after a fire erupted inside a northeast Washington apartment building Sunday morning.

Spokesman Tim Wilson confirmed one fatality and said two other patents were examined. It is uncertain if they were transported or if any injuries were sustained.

The incident began in the 4200 block of Edson Place, NE, around 4:12 a.m. Some residents said they had to escape through heavy smoke to get to safety.

The fire is believed to have started on the first floor and the cause is under investigation.
