The left lane of the Inner Loop of I-495 was closed on the American Legion Bridge over the Potomac River Wednesday following an inspection.
The closure is a precautionary measure after a crack was discovered in a steel beam, according to the Maryland State Highway Association.
"Repair plans are in place, and all lanes on the American Legion Bridge are scheduled to be open by early next week," said Maryland State Highway Administrator Neil J. Pedersen. "Additional permanent repairs will be made in the near future."
Workers will reinforce the bridge with temporary support over the weekend, which could mean additional lane closures Saturday and Sunday.
