One Dead in Spotsylvania County Plane Crash

Pilot only occupant of the plane

Virginia State Police say suicide may have been a factor in a single-engine plane crash in Spotsylvania County, Va. Monday evening.

According to officials, police were dispatched to the Shannon Airport just after 6:30 p.m. for a crashed plane. A single-engine plane was flying near the airport when it crash landed near a runway.

The impact caused the plane to catch fire, killing 22-year-old Edwin Hassel of Fredericksburg. He was the only occupant of the plane.

Police said Tuesday they are looking into the possibility suicide may have been a factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation, and the FAA and the NTSB have been notified.
