One Dead in Maryland City Mobile Home Fire

A man died in a mobile home fire in Maryland City Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out about 8:30 a.m. at 9 Zona St. near Route 198. Authorities say 40 firefighters needed 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Once the fire was out, they found a 55-year-old disabled man and his two dogs dead inside the double-wide mobile home.

The man was a hunter, and the fire set off some ammunition, News4's Pat Collins reported, causing some would-be rescuers to back away. At one point, neighbors tried to use garden hoses on the fire, but the fire was too hot.

The victim was not officially identified. He and his wife lived in the home for more than 20 years, and he recently was released from a hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
