On-Duty Winchester Police Officer Killed in Crash

Hunter Edwards was a 4-year veteran of the Winchester Police Department

A Winchester, Virginia, officer was responding to a call Saturday night when he was killed in a crash.

Hunter Edwards was a 4-year veteran of the Winchester Police Department. He was a member of the SWAT team and had served on the Civil Disturbance Unit. He was 30 years old.

Edwards crashed on West Jubal Drive about 10:50 p.m. while responding to a call about a fight. Police say it was a single-vehicle crash.

He leaves behind a wife and stepson.

Chief John Piper told officers paying respects at the Winchester Hospital, "This is going to be a very difficult time for Hunter’s family and for each of us. Take care of yourselves; take care of each other."

Details of funeral arrangements are pending.

Gov. Ralph Northam said on Twitter he ordered American and Virginia flags to fly half staff on the date of Edwards’ burial from sunrise to sunset at federal, state, and local facilities.

"Let’s keep his family and colleagues in our thoughts," Northam said.
