Olsson of Olsson's Books and Records Is Dead

District literary mavens face another blow, as another one of their own has died.

John Olsson, of Olsson's Records and Books, died on Thursday, Publishers Weekly reports. Olsson, who was 78, died of a heart attack at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Md.

A Washington native and graduate of Catholic University, Olsson founded his own record store in 1972, later adding books to complete his influential brand.

At one time the Olsson's chain included nine stores selling books and records throughout the District, home to some 200 employees. However, Olsson's Books and Records went bankrupt in 2008 and closed all its locations.

The death of Olsson follows close on the heels of the death of another major District bookseller: Politics and Prose co-owner Carla Cohen, who died Oct. 11.

Olsson's funeral was held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Md. Condolences may be sent in the form of donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Maryland Chapter, at 11350 McCormick Road in Hunt Valley, MD, 21031.
