Officers Identified in Fatal Carjacking Shooting

19-Year-Old killed in alleged carjacking attempt

PALMER PARK, Md. -- Two officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man who allegedly tried to carjack an officer have been identified by Prince George's County police.

Police Officer First Class James McCreary and Cpl. Moise Apollon have been placed on administrative leave in connection with the shooting.

The shooting occurred Monday night while a team of plainclothes narcotics officers conducted an operation in the 3200 block of Naylor Road between Suitland and the District. Police said 19-year-old Joshua Sands displayed a gun and demanded an officer's vehicle, but officers fired at Sands. He was hit in the upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and a handgun was recovered.

The shooting remains under investigation.
