Officer Shoots Man After Fight at Md. Liquor Store

A police officer from the Town of Edmonston shot a man after he was assaulted outside a liquor store in Bladensburg, Maryland, Thursday morning.

Witnesses said the man was walking by the 201 Drive Thru liquor store on Kenilworth Avenue yelling, flailing his arms and acting erratic.

The officer attempted to interview the man outside the liquor store but the interview became violent, police said.

The suspect hit the officer several times in the face. The officer tried to stop the assault with a stun gun, but it didn't work, police said. The officer then shot the man in the lower body.

The suspect and officer were taken to the hospital.

The officer is expected to be OK.

"It's a very unfortunate situation," Edmonston Mayor Tracy Grant said. "It's something that we never want to occur in any of our municipalities or towns, and we just hope that everyone is OK."

Witnesses said the man is homeless and spent a lot of time in the area.

An employee at the store said the man bought something there before the shooting.

Police are reviewing security camera video from the liquor store.
