Nude Photos of Montgomery County Students Posted on Snapchat: Officials

Montgomery County public school officials are warning parents after discovering some middle school students sent nude photos of themselves to someone on the social media platform Snapchat.

Montgomery County Public Schools spokesman Derek Turner said someone asked students at several middle schools in the county to send nude pictures through Snapchat and more than a handful of students have done so.

"Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has received multiple reports from community members that one or more individuals is posting inappropriate content on a private social media platform, including nude images of MCPS students. It is our understanding that many of the nude images on the private site were taken by or with the consent of the students appearing in the photos," the school system said in a letter to parents an guardians on Friday.

The schools include Loiderman Middle School in Silver Spring, Farquhar Middle School in Olney and a third middle school that is unknown at this time, Turner said. School officials started hearing about the issue in the past few days.

Montgomery County police are investigating, Turner said.

Parents who believe their child has information or may have had similar interactions on Snapchat should call police at 240-773-5400.

The school system encouraged parents to talk to their children about social media and online safety.

Note: School officials initially named Forest Oak Middle School as one of the affected schools. They now say that is incorrect and it is Farquhar Middle School.
