New York Avenue Closures Coming

Traffic on New York Avenue is already bad, but brace yourself -- it is about to get worse.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, crews will begin setting up the work zone on the New York Avenue Bridge between Florida Avenue and Penn Street NE.

The bridge is getting a complete overhaul, and that means lane closures. By 5 a.m. Monday, the bridge will go from six lanes down to 4.

Motorists can expect delays of 15 to 30 minutes. The work is expected to take two years to complete.

To compensate some New York Avenue commuters for the inconvenience, the department is offering a monthly incentive of $50 to be used toward another form of transportation.

The program is being offered on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, click here.
