New Perk for VRE Riders

Wi-Fi on the way

Virginia commuters will soon be able to surf the net while riding the rails.

The Virginia Railway Express plans to offer wireless Internet service to riders.

Operations Board chairman Paul Milde told The Free Lance-Star that other transit agencies have seen ridership and rider satisfaction increase with the addition of Wi-Fi. He added that the railway does not expect to pass the cost of Wi-Fi service to riders.

A recent test run of wireless devices equipped with 3G technology showed complete coverage on the railway's Manassas Line and partial coverage on the Fredericksburg Line. A dead zone between Quantico and Leeland Road could be resolved soon by service improvements currently under way by Verizon.

A schedule for implementing Wi-Fi has not yet been set.
