New I-66 Flyover Ramp Coming

New pattern part of larger renovation of interchange

A new traffic pattern will be in place in northern Virginia that officials say will smooth the trip for drivers exiting I-66 eastbound on to I-495 north.

The new ramp will bring drivers to the right side of I-495, allowing drivers to merge from the right.  Under the old configuration, drivers getting off of I-66 east heading for the Beltway northbound were faced to merge from the left.

There will be roadwork through the weekend at the interchange to prepare for the new pattern.

Starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16 until 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, crews will close both exits from I-66 east to I-495 north and three lanes on I-495 north to prepare for a traffic shift to the new I-66 eastbound flyover ramp.

Drivers will be able to take the new flyover after 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.

The entire I66-Beltway interchange is under instruction to improve traffic flow.  The project is called the Beltway High Occupancy Toll Lanes Project, anticipated to end in the fall of 2012.
