New Dupont Station Escalators in 2011: Metro

Metro riders should expect Dupont Circle station escalators to be repaired at the 19th and Q St. entrances this month and three brand-new escalators to be installed at the station next year.

Metro officials announced the escalator improvements Thursday as part of a report on Dupont Circle Station escalator problems. Riders have trudged up 120 escalator steps during service outages. Metro said the 188-foot escalators are the sixth longest in the Metrorail system.

Metro officials outlined ways to improve service during escalator outages, which include sending additional officers for crowd control.

In June, the transit system brought in an outside expert to help diagnose chronic problems with the escalators and elevators. The expert's report is expected by mid-September.
