New Charges Against DJ Accused of Sexually Assaulting, Filming Unconscious Women

A party DJ accused of filming unconscious women and sexually assaulting some of them is facing additional charges in Virginia.

Joseph M. Rivera, 34, formerly of Alexandria, was arrested July 16 in Las Vegas following an investigation by Fairfax County and Alexandria police.

The newest charge stems from an incident in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington. Authorities say that Rivera sexually assaulted and photographed a woman while she was unconscious between in the early hours of Dec. 26.

Rivera, who is still in Las Vegas waiting extradition to Virginia, has been charged with aggravated sexual battery in that case.

He was previously charged with rape, aggravated sexual battery, animate sexual object penetration and two counts of unlawful filming.

The initial investigation began after a relative of one of the victims contacted police in May.

It's unclear how the women lost consciousness, but police say that Rivera stored videos of his victims on electronic devices without the women's knowledge or consent.

Police said all of the victims are adults, mostly in their 20s, according to the Washington Post. Some have been identified, but police said they are working to find others.

Rivera worked as a party disc jockey and hosted bartending competitions across the region, police said. Police did not say whether he met victims through his job.

News4's Erika Gonzalez spoke with one of Rivera's former co-workers earlier this month.

"He did come across as creepy and and made some of the female co-workers uncomfortable, from what I was told by them," the coworker said. "He invited drunk women back to his apartment."

He is believed to have left the area in June and has confessed to the crimes, police said.
