New Arrests in U Street Funeral Slaying

Man killed after service in September 2010

The Metropolitan Police Department arrested two more suspects in the fatal shooting following a funeral service in the U Street Corridor in September 2010.

Shots were fired at an SUV following the service for Ashley McRae at Walker Memorial Baptist Church in the 2000 block of 13th Street NW, police said. The driver sped on to U Street, struck other vehicles and flipped on its roof near 11th Street.

Two people in the SUV were struck by gunfire, police said. Jamal Coates, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several hours later that day, police arrested Brandon Miller and charged him with first-degree murder while armed.

More than a year later, police arrested 23-year-old Marcellus Jackson and 21-year-old Kier Johnson Monday. They also were charged with first-degree murder while armed.

Police do not believe the shooting was connected to McRae’s death. It apparently stemmed from an argument from two months earlier between rival neighborhood crews.
