A new app lets D.C., Maryland and Virginia residents record and upload videos of questionable police encounters as reports to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Residents can use the free Mobile Justice app when they think an officer is out of line, the ACLU's D.C., Maryland and Virginia branches said in a release Friday.
The app secures videos in one place, even if a phone is taken away.
“Now, those in communities experiencing racial profiling, over-policing, and military-style policing tactics, along with their allies, can record police encounters and be assured that the recording is safe,” ACLU of Maryland Executive Director Susan Goering said.
All recordings on the app are automatically emailed to the corresponding ACLU branch.
A “witness” function also helps a potential victim warn other nearby app users of an interaction about to take place.
The app, available in English and Spanish, has a section to help citizens understand their rights with police encounters.
