Sending Out an S.O.S.

The restaurant 'where everybody knows your name' in danger of shutting down

Bethesda has no shortage of restaurants.  With 200 eateries within its borders, the economic downturn has forced diners who are cutting back to spread their business thin, and now owners of Gaffney's on Wisconsin Avenue fear they may have to close their doors.

Regulars love the friendly neighborhood atmosphere of Gaffney's.

"This is the 'Cheers' of Chevy Chase and Bethesda," one customer told News 4.

But despite customers' devotion to their favorite haunt, the truth is, people are going out less, and when they do dine out, they're spending less-- conditions that not even a restaurant like Gaffney's with a loyal following can overcome.

"We had some meetings with our lawyers and bankers, and realized that we may not make it through the recession," owner Patrick Gaffney said.

Gaffney's isn't give up that easily. Prompted by a customer's suggestion, employees have placed cards on the tables, letting patrons know their business means the difference between success and failure. The signs read, "We need a bailout or more business. You can help save us from going out of business. Please come often, and tell your friends and neighbors."

The cards already seem to be paying off.

"They do care. We had two separate groups yesterday who came in just to see if they can help save Gaffney's," Gaffney said.
