Neighbor, Visitor, Worker ID'd as 3 Killed by Man Who Held Wife Captive, Police Say

Police have identified the three people killed inside a Maryland home Monday by a man from a neighboring home who held his wife captive for days, according to authorities.

Mary Ann Olson, 66; Danny Lee Murphy, 70, and Craig Harold Shotwell, 54, died in Olson's home at 22002 Brown Farm Way in Brookeville, Maryland.

Police say Olson's neighbor, 41-year-old Christopher Wilson Snyder, fatally shot them after he held his wife captive over the weekend. His wife escaped Monday, but he chased her to Olson's house across the street, according to Montgomery County Police.

Olson, a retired doctor, tried to calm Snyder, her family members said, before he opened fire and killed three people.

“Mary Olson was very much beloved,” said Keith Surland, an associate pastor at Mount Airy Bible Church, where Olson was a dedicated community member.

"We’re shocked by her sudden death," Surland said. "But we’re comforted in the fact that Mary knew the lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior."

Olson is survived by a husband and two children. She became a grandmother last month.

“They were awesome. If you could picture the perfect American family, that’s what they were," the family's neighbor, Becky Sisson, said.

Police said Murphy was from South Dakota and was visiting Olson.

Shotwell, of Owings Mills, Maryland, was in the home to perform work on the property, police said. His neighbors said he was always friendly. Shotwell did odd jobs around others' homes and never accepted payment, neighbors said. He leaves behind two children.

Three others, including the suspect's wife, were able to escape the chaos. Officials did not release her name.

Neighbors said they heard gunfire and knew something was wrong. Multiple people called 911.

Police responded about 3:45 p.m. Monday and discovered Snyder had run back to his own home and barricaded himself inside. He killed himself after an hourslong standoff with police.
