Nearly 40 vehicle models have made the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's list of the safest cars on the road.
Honda has the most cars on the list. The Civic and Accord are among the eight Honda models that made the list. Mazda, Volvo and Subaru also had several cars make the cut.
GM and Chrysler were the best among American automakers.
Many of the cars featured on this year's list had one thing in common -- new technology to avoid crashes.
The list is significantly smaller this year as vehicles had to meet tougher standards. There were 130 vehicles on the list last year; this year's list features only 39.
