Nats Search for Anthem Singers

Winners to belt out sacred song at home game

More than 60 people turned up at Nationals Park Saturday to audition for a shot to sing the national anthem at a home game.

Tom Davis, the team's entertainment coordinator, said he was looking for a more traditional sound. "More how Francis Scott Key wrote it," Davis said.

With 67 auditions, he had his work cut out for him (not to mention listening to the same song over and over again).

Performers don't get paid if they get picked, but they do get tickets to the game.

"It's a great opportunity for the Nationals and the fans to connect and for the fans to get more involved in the game," Davis said about the auditions. "I'm not sure how many of the other teams do it, but it's something fun for us to do and to show the fans that we care, and give them a chance to take part in something that we do six months out of the year."

Davis says those selected to sing at one of the 81 home games will find out in the next couple weeks. He says in a typical season they have about 70 different performers with a few repeats.
