National Zoo Increasing Security During Spring Break

Expect to go through extra security if you're planning to visit the Smithsonian National Zoo during the first couple weeks of spring.

The zoo will start stepping up security on Saturday in anticipation of its busy period. Security checkpoints will be in effect through April 8.

Visitors with backpacks, purses, strollers and containers will have to go through bag checks. Guards may also hand-screen visitors with electronic wands, the zoo said.

Some of the zoo's entrances will also close periodically.
