NW Woman Slain on Long Island

Victim killed while visiting a friend

BELLPORT, N.Y. -- A D.C. woman visiting a friend in Long Island was killed over the weekend.

Robert Schiavo, 22, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 61-year-old Nancy McKinley, Suffolk County police said.

McKinley was found early Sunday at a home in Bellport suffering from multiple stab wounds, police said. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

The victim's friend, who lives in the home where McKinley was stabbed, told police an intruder had attacked McKinley. The intruder fled the scene before police arrived.

Schiavo will be arraigned on Monday, police said.

Officials at the National Presbyterian School in northwest Washington say McKinley worked as a librarian at the elementary school from 1997 until her retirement in 2000.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of this passionate, energetic and loving educator," said Jim Neill, head of school. "The thoughts and prayers of the entire NPS community are with her family and friends at this time."

Her coworkers remembered her as a dedicated, lively and dynamic teacher in both the library and the classroom, according to a statement released by the school.

According to a recent news report, McKinley's husband was ambassador to Haiti in the 1980s, the Washington Post reported.
