Murder Mystery in Ex-Pentagon Official's Death

No new leads in John Wheeler murder

A tip line set up in hopes of obtaining information about the killing of a former Pentagon official has not produced any leads, Newark, Del., police said.

The tip line was set up after John Wheeler's family offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in his death, police Lt. Mark Farrall said. But the tip line has not generated any useful information and authorities are still asking the public for assistance in the investigation.

Police have not identified any suspects and have yet to determine where Wheeler was killed or how his body wound up in a trash bin in Newark on New Year’s Eve.

Wheeler was a well-known military expert in the Washington, D.C., area. He served in three Republican administrations and helped build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall.

He was last seen wandering around downtown Wilmington in a confused state in the two days before his body was found.
