Mr. Smith's Piano Bar in Georgetown to Close Current Location; Managers Plan to Relocate

Piano bar is set to vacate its location at 3104 M Street due to a steep rent increase

Mr. Smith's has been an M Street mainstay in Georgetown for decades -- but that might be about to change.

The piano bar is set to vacate its current location due to a steep rent increase, CityPaper first reported.

Manager Ernesto Carrasco told NBC Washington that he's confident Mr. Smith's will relocate to another Georgetown spot, but couldn't disclose whether a final decision had been made.

Carrasco said managers planned to meet later Monday and would have more information by Tuesday.

Wherever Mr. Smith's ends up, it remains to be seen whether a new location would have the character of its spot at 3104 M Street NW, with its black awning bearing the familiar "The Friendlist Saloon in Town!" The bar hosts a piano sing-along each night, and also houses a "hidden" garden patio with cascading greenery, gas lighting and a glass-paneled roof that opens to the sky.

The M Street piano bar has welcomed numerous celebrities and served as one of famed singer-songwriter Tori Amos' first gigs as a teenager.
