A D.C. mother is speaking out about the painful loss of her young son who was shot and killed in the District during an attempted robbery.
Steven Slaughter, 14, was killed on Minnesota Avenue SE in January. He was walking home from a convenience store with some friends at the time.
"I’m in love when I think about my son, but when I think about what happened to him. I can’t," Slaughter's mother told News4. She did not want to be identified.
"He should be here with me. That’s what goes through my mind. He should be here with his family," she said.
On Monday, D.C. police announced the arrest of 21-year-old Anthony Deandre Allen. He has been charged with first-degree murder.
Police said Allen shot Steven during an attempted robbery.
"They took something precious from everybody. That wasn’t meant for him. He did not deserve that," Slaughter's mother said.

Steven a 9th grader at Friendship Collegiate Academy, where he played football.
"He was no bad child. He was a good child. All he could do was make you laugh," his mom said.
D.C. police are still searching for another suspect.
“Being able to close the case, I think, is the least we can do for the family, but they’re going to have to live this for the rest of their lives,” Police Chief Peter Newsham said Monday.
