Mother Drowns Trying To Save Toddler

Toddler fell into Marsh Creek

A woman drowned in Caroline County on Father's Day after jumping into a creek to save her toddler, authorities said.

Natural Resources Police Cpl. Barry Ball said the woman and her husband were packing up after fishing on Poplar Neck Bridge when the toddler fell into Marsh Creek in Preston, Md., on Sunday. The couple jumped in, and the husband got hold of his wife and child, but the current began pulling them away from the bridge.

Sgt. John Felts of the Salisbury Police Department, who was in the area, jumped in and got the toddler to shore. Officials said the father lost contact with his wife, who could not swim.

The Star Democrat reported that authorities later found the 22-year-old woman near the bridge.
