More Than Dozen Officers on Leave After Temple Hills Shooting

Questions remain after police kill man with gun outside bar and grill

TEMPLE HILLS  -- More than a dozen police officers are on leave after shooting and killing a man with a gun outside a Temple Hills restaurant.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight Tuesday when someone at Gill's Holiday Liquor Sports Bar and Restaurant called 911, police said.

The man, identified as 26-year-old Nicholas Howard of southeast D.C., came out of the restaurant and fired at the first officers who arrived, Prince George's County police said. After an initial exchange of shots, more officers arrived.

Two Maryland National Capital Park Police officers and 12 county officers fired their weapons, officials said. They all are on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

It's unclear how many times the man was shot. No one else was injured.
