WASHINGTON -- More city residents could receive food stamps or receive more food stamps under legislation that would let the District take advantage of two federal programs, D.C. Council member Michael Brown said.
The independent at-large councilman said proposed legislation would allow the city to expand eligibility for assistance by raising the maximum household income from 130 percent to 200 percent of the federal poverty level.
Some low-income households could begin receiving food stamps and others some could receive $30 to $60 a month more in food stamps.
Brown said he learned on the campaign trail that some senior citizens were receiving $10 a month in benefits.
