Montgomery County Schools to Close for Inauguration

Baltimore students also given Inauguration Day holiday

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Montgomery County school officials have decided to join most other schools in the Washington region in declaring Inauguration Day a holiday and canceling classes.

The Montgomery school board voted Tuesday to close the schools on Jan. 20.

The county joins school systems in Charles, Prince George's and St. Mary's counties in Maryland, as well as Virginia's Loudoun and Prince William counties in changing their school calendars.

School systems in Fairfax County and the District of Columbia had already planned to close.

Montgomery School Superintendent Jerry Weast had recommended schools stay open, but parents and staff pressed the school board to cancel classes for the historic inauguration.

Baltimore city’s school board also voted Tuesday to give students and staff the day off.
