ROCKVILLE, Md. -- The Montgomery County School Board is considering a resolution to declare Inauguration Day a holiday.
More than 3,000 people have signed an online petition urging Superintendent Jerry Weast to cancel classes when President-elect Barack Obama is sworn in. Board member Christopher Barclay introduced the resolution Tuesday and said the inauguration will be "unlike any event that we are likely to witness again in our lifetimes."
Weast suggested that schools remain open to avoid child-care problems and having to change the school calendar.
The board will consider the resolution on Dec. 9.
Classes already are canceled for D.C. public schools and for Virginia schools in Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties, as well as Alexandria.
