Montgomery County Launches Campaign on Pedestrian Crashes

Montgomery County officials are launching a new campaign aimed at cutting down on pedestrian crashes involving distracted teens.

The You Only Live Once, or YOLO, campaign comes two years after 15-year-old Christina Morris-Ward was fatally hit by a car as she distractedly crossed the street on her way to class at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, County Council President Craig Rice and other officials are planning to announce the campaign at Seneca Valley High School on Wednesday morning.

Leggett says in a news release that the YOLO campaign hopes to recruit students to convince their friends that driving or crossing streets while texting or otherwise using their phones "could mean the difference between life and death.''
