Montgomery Council Approves ‘McMansion' Limits

New law starts April 28

ROCKVILLE, Md.  -- The Montgomery County Council has approved legislation that sets limits on the size of some new homes.

The legislation applies primarily to lots in older communities inside the Capital Beltway. It sets limits on the size of homes that replace older homes. It also imposes more rigid height limits in some communities.

Council member Roger Berliner says the legislation targets oversized homes planned for neighborhoods with smaller homes. Single-story homes and small additions are not affected by the measure.

The new law takes applies to building permits filed after April 28, 2009.

The only no vote was cast by councilman Michael Knapp, who says the measure could stifle construction in a slow economy.
