Missing Swimmer Presumed Drowned in Anne Arundel

A 24-year-old man is presumed dead after disappearing while swimming in an Anne Arundel County river Thursday.

He had been swimming off a boat between Gibson Island and Dobbins Island in the Magothy River when he went missing shortly before 6 p.m.

Anne Arundel Fire, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and a Maryland State Police helicopter worked together on a two hour search, but found nothing. The search was called off at 8:30 p.m. due to darkness.

Divers were scheduled to resume their search Friday.

The victim's identity is not being released until next of kin is notified.

Division Chief Keith Swindle says officials are still investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the incident.
