Metro Train Hits, Kills Man in Maryland

A man struck by a train at the Cheverly Metro station died Saturday, according to Prince George's County police.

County fire and EMS department spokesman Mark Brady said crews were called just before 11 a.m. to the Metro stop at 5501 Columbia Park Road in Cheverly. Brady said the man was trapped under the train and in between the train and the platform.

Power on the tracks was shut down and crews rescued the man, but he died at the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates the man was on the tracks intentionally, Metro said.

Trains shared one track between the Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton stations, but did not servicing the Cheverly station again until about 2 p.m. Normal service was restored later in the afternoon.

That caused major delays on the Orange Line. Shuttle buses were available between the Deanwood and New Carrollton stops.
