Metro is taking advantage of the long holiday weekend and closing three stations through Monday, Sept. 2.
Trains and buses are operating on a shortened schedule for Labor Day.
The Metrorail system is opening at 7 a.m. Monday and will close at midnight. Parking's free at Metrorail facilities and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.
Buses are also scheduled to run on a Sunday schedule, and riders are urged to check timetables for schedules.
On the Red Line:
Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, buses will replace trains between the Forest Glen and Rhode Island Avenue stations. The Silver Spring, Takoma and Brookland stations will be closed. Fort Totten will be open for Green and Yellow Line trains only. Normal service will resume Tuesday morning.
Metro says the buses will operate on two routes:
- Limited stop buses will run between Forest Glen and Rhode Island Avenue with a single stop at Silver Spring. Riders should allow 12 minutes of travel time between Forest Glen and Silver Spring, and 25 minutes of travel time between Silver Spring and Rhode Island Avenue.
- Local buses will make stops at the Silver Spring, Takoma, Fort Totten and Brookland stations. Riders should allow 10 minutes of travel time for each station stop.
The derailment of two cars on a non-revenue train early Friday morning disrupted service between Fort Totten and NoMa-Gallaudet prior to the scheduled closing. The derailment damaged the third rail, signal cables and track components, Metro spokes man Dan Stessel explained.
