Metro Preps for Winter Weather

20 trains outfitted with de-icing equipment

Occasional delays on the Metro have perhaps come to be expected, but this winter, the transit agency hopes to avoid major disruptions to its service from the winter weather.

Already, Metro has up to 20 trains equipped with de-icing equipment, 2,200 tons of bulk rock salt to treat Metro roadways and parking lots, and 18,000 50-pound bags of de-icer for treating sidewalks and platforms.

The agency also said it has "hundreds of snow-trained employees ready for whatever Mother Nature has in store."

A snowstorm of eight inches or more, however, may cause a suspension of train service for above ground stations.   Passengers are advised to call Metro at 202-637-7000 or check its website, www.metroopensdoors.com.

As for Metrobus, Metro says service will depend on road conditions, so passengers should expect possible detours and delays due to changing road conditions.

Passengers with scheduled MetroAccess rides should call 301-562-5360 for updates.
