Md. Officials: 4 Officers Hurt in Inmate Attack

Maryland prison officials say four correctional officers at the North Branch Correctional Institution were injured when an inmate attacked one officer and three other officers came to his aid.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the four officers who work at the maximum-security facility were treated Tuesday for minor injuries at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman Mark Vernarelli says the situation began with an apparently unprovoked assault by one inmate.

The newspaper reports that this is the second recent assault on a worker at the facility. Officials say an inmate hit a dietary worker on the head with a broom on Friday. The inmate, who is serving a life sentence for murder, has been transferred and faces first-degree assault charges.
