Md. Senate Passes Ban on Texting Behind the Wheel

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Texting while driving in Maryland could soon cost you as much as $500 after the state Senate overwhelmingly approved a ban.

The bill passed by a wide margin of 43-4 and would make the violation a misdemeanor.

Supporters of the legislation say sending texts while driving is just too dangerous. The bill now lies in the hands of the state House of Delegates, where a similar measure died last year.

There are currently no restrictions for adult drivers when it comes to using cell phones or electronic devices on the road. Minors with provisional licenses or learner's permits are prohibited from using them unless it's to call 911.

If the bill passes, Maryland would join seven other states including the district when it comes to banning texting while driving.
