Md. Robbery Suspect Dies in Custody

Police: Michael Malpass was undergoing treatment for heroin use

The Harford County Sheriff's Office says a suspect in a string of robberies in three counties has been found dead in the county's detention center.

Officials say a correctional officer found 26-year-old Michael Ray Malpass of Chestertown unresponsive in his cell on Thursday night. He was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead early Friday. Investigators say there are no signs of foul play.

Malpass had been at the detention center for about a week. He was being held without bond and was awaiting trial on charges of armed robbery and assault linked to a robbery spree in Harford, Cecil and Baltimore counties.

The sheriff's office says Malpass was an admitted heroin user and was undergoing treatment.
