Md. Highway Agency Touts Snow Readiness

The Maryland State Highway Administration says it is refining its salting technique in preparation for winter snow and ice.

The agency is highlighting its plans at its annual Western Maryland Snow Show Tuesday in Allegany County community of LaVale.

Spokesman David Buck says the agency aims to do more pre-treatment of highways with salt brine to prevent frozen precipitation from sticking to the surface.

He says the SHA also plans to pre-moisten more of the rock salt it spreads on the highways to reduce bouncing and scattering of the material.

Buck says even the best surface preparation can't prevent snow from piling up during a heavy storm. He says the only solution then is good, old-fashioned plowing.
