Md. AG Joins Push for Federal Government to Stop Robocalls

Maryland’s attorney general joined dozens of others around the country in pushing the federal government to stop robocalls.

The calls have become more sophisticated and often times display a local phone number to get you to answer. By “spoofing,” scammers hide their identities.

Thirty attorneys general sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission urging the adoption of new rules to allow telephone providers to block illegal robocalls.

A common illegal robocall is the IRS scam, in which scammers spoof legitimate IRS numbers to trick consumers into paying thousands of dollars.

Attorneys general say the proposed rules wouldn't block every illegal robocall but would be a step in reducing scammers' ability to spoof real and fake numbers.
