Applicants for driver's licenses in Maryland will soon have to show their driving skills on the road.
Right now, most applicants are tested only on an off-road course. But in recent months, the state Motor Vehicle Administration has started using an on- and off-road test at its sites in Frederick and Waldorf.
MVA's Administrator tells the Baltimore Sun the new test is a better gauge of driving skills. MVA offices in the Baltimore and Washington metro areas will start using the test this fall, and it's expected to be used across the state next year.
First-time drivers, people licensed in most foreign countries and those who have to pass a new exam after losing their licenses would take the on-road test.
