Maryland State Trooper Charged With DUI

A Maryland state trooper who was still on probation has been charged with driving under the influence after a crash in Cecil County, Maryland, police said.

Trooper Thomas C. Hobbs, 26, is assigned to the state police's Aviation Command as a rescue technician at the Frederick Section.

At about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, other troopers responded to a report of an overturned vehicle on Route 279 in Elkton, Maryland. They said they found Hobbs, who was driving, inside the car.

Hobbs "exhibited signs indicative of someone under the influence," police said in a statement.

Hobbs was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired, negligent driving, and reckless driving, police said.

He has been suspended from duty with pay. The State Police Internal Affairs Unit was also notified and will be conducting an investigation, police said.

Hobbs has been employed by the Maryland State Police for 17 months. Troopers are probationary until they have served for 24 months.

Hobbs was hospitalized after the crash.
