Maryland State Officials Investigate Stolen Laptops

More than 1,300 employees' IDs may be at risk

Maryland Department of General Services Police are investigating the thefts of two laptops that contained names and Social Security numbers of more than 1,300 state employees.

Two Department of Information Technology laptop computers were reported stolen from a secured state office in Baltimore on Nov. 12.

The employees whose Social Security numbers were stored on data files worked for the Maryland Department of the Environment.

State officials say there is no evidence that personal data were retrieved or misused. But the state's Department of Information Technology is working to notify all 1,367 people whose names were in the computer to suggest they place a fraud alert on their credit reporting accounts.

The employees worked at the Department of the Environment from January 2000 through October 2006.
