Maryland officials met to discuss plans and prevention strategies for fighting the Zika virus if it appears in the state.
The town hall meeting was held Thursday evening in Silver Spring at the Dennis Avenue Health Center.
Howard Haft, deputy director of public health for the state health department, spoke. His talk was followed by an update on local activities related to prevention and protection from the virus.
Dr. Ulder Tillman, Montgomery County's health officer, and Earl Stoddard, director of the Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, were also there to discuss Zika.
The virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes that have actively been transmitting the virus in the Caribbean, South America and Central America. There has been no local transmission from Maryland mosquitoes.
