Maryland Officer Charged With Murder in Woman's Death After Police Standoff

Baltimore officer charged in the fatal shooting that led to an hours-long standoff with police colleagues

A Baltimore police officer has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a woman that led to an hours-long standoff with his police department colleagues.

Police said Wednesday that James Smith has been charged in the death of Kendra Diggs. Police have not detailed the victim's relationship with Smith, but they described it as a domestic shooting.

Diggs was shot Tuesday afternoon. Police say Smith barricaded himself inside a west Baltimore home afterward. Smith's 4-year-old son left the home during the standoff. It ended hours later when police say Smith surrendered to hostage negotiators.

Smith is a 20-year veteran of the department who worked in the traffic division.
