Maryland Man Accused of Attacking Mother With Hammer

Woman in serious condition

A 33-year-old Annapolis man was charged with attacking his mother with a hammer, Anne Arundel County police said.

Robert N. Benscoter was arrested Tuesday night and charged with attempted second-degree murder, assault and reckless endangerment, police said. His 61-year-old mother was struck repeatedly in the head and torso and was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was listed in serious condition, police said.

The woman fled to a neighbor's house, where she called police shortly after 8 p.m., police said. Benscoter was found in a wooded area nearby and was taken into custody about 10 p.m.
