Maryland Inmate Convicted in Escape and Carjacking

A Maryland prison inmate is looking at more prison time after his conviction on charges of attempted first-degree murder, escape and carjacking in Garrett County.

A jury in Oakland convicted 38-year-old Larry Jerome Johnson Thursday. He could get a life sentence plus 70 years added to his prison term. No sentencing date was set.

Johnson left a highway work crew in September 2012 and used a pair of pliers to stab a correctional officer in the torso. He then got behind the wheel of a prison van, wrecked that vehicle, flagged down a motorist, stabbed him in the head and stole his car.

Maryland State Police caught Johnson after he hit a tree.

Johnson is serving a 20-year sentence for carjacking and handgun convictions in Prince George's County.
