Maryland Democratic Gubernatorial Candidates Woo Labor Group

Attorney general candidates speak on panel

Maryland Democratic candidates for governor are wooing a labor organization for its endorsement.

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, Attorney General Doug Gansler and Delegate Heather Mizeur spoke Monday at the Maryland State and DC Building Trades Conference.

Brown touted a gas tax increase approved this year as a crucial step in funding badly needed transportation projects that will put builders to work.

Brown, Gansler and Mizeur all expressed support for exploring project labor agreements to steer construction work to unionized firms.

Gansler noted the need for more inspectors to enforce prevailing wage violations.

Mizeur expressed support for collective bargaining on college campuses.

Maryland's four Democratic candidates for attorney general took part in a panel at the conference.

State Sen. Brian Frosh said he has demonstrated a record of independence that will enable him to be the “people's lawyer.”

Delegate Bill Frick said the next attorney general needs to be an activist for working people.

Delegate Aisha Braveboy said she would create an office that works directly with labor unions.

Delegate Jon Cardin pledged to prosecute and litigate violations of labor laws.

Rep. Elijah Cummings and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, who is Brown's running mate, made welcoming remarks at the conference.
